ALBERT S. BARBER AWARD (2007/08) RECIPIENT
CARMEN POULIN DIRECTOR, CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS
UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA
CITATION
The Albert S. Barber Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the advancement of the philosophy and practice of co-operative education in Canada. This award is sponsored by the University of Waterloo.
The CAFCE Board of Directors is pleased to present the 2007/08 Albert S. Barber Award to Carmen Poulin of the University of Ottawa.
Carmen has been a member of the CAFCE Accreditation Council since 1990 and chaired the Council from 2004-2006. Carmen has been instrumental in the direction of co-operative education in Canada through her involvement and leadership of the Accreditation Council. She has proven her strong dedication to the philosophy of co-operative education models, chaired numerous Accreditation Team Reviews across the Country and led external university academic reviews.
During her tenure as Chair of the Accreditation Council, the Accreditation Council Standards and Rationale document was developed. Carmen has made numerous presentations at conferences nationally and internationally including CAFCE, CEIA and WACE conferences.
At the University of Ottawa in 1991, there were co-op programs in 12 disciplines with 400 students. Since Carmen took on the role of Director, co-operative education at the University of Ottawa has grown to 66 co-op programs with over 3400 students and includes 4 new co-op programs at the graduate level. Carmen consistently maintained faculty involvement in the co-op programs where students are given academic credits for co-op work terms. University of Ottawa was the first university in Canada to award academic credits for co-op work terms. Carmen ensured that CAFCE benefited from the University of Ottawa Co-operative Education staff who volunteered on many CAFCE committees including the Research, Statistics and National Conference Committees.
Carmen has been on a seven-month sabbatical leave to research co-op best practices on a national level. With over 20 years of contribution to co-op programs at the University of Ottawa as well as to programs provincially, nationally and internationally, Carmen has made a significant impact to co-operative education. Carmen embodies the philosophy and practice of co-operative education in Canada.
Please join me in congratulating Carmen on receiving the CAFCE Albert S. Barber Award 2007/08. Thank you Carmen for your time, enthusiasm and dedication to CAFCE!
